The US wireless carrier is reportedly getting close to commercializing its wireless hotspot platform.
The device, which is being built by a new startup called Io Devices, uses infrared light and light-emitting diodes to connect to nearby Wi-Fi networks.
The technology works by emitting light in order to create a beam of infrared light that can be directed at nearby Wi.com networks.
Wireless carriers are currently using wireless hotspots in places like malls and schools to keep Wi-Vi users connected to their homes.
The Io Devices technology is not unique to Sprint.
Apple is already selling Wi-Pass to other carriers and there are similar technology companies like Infinix in the wireless chip space.
But Io Devices is reportedly targeting commercial use of its technology.
